A Guide to Applying for an Apprenticeship
So, you’ve completed your exams, left school and decided that the route you’re going down is an apprenticeship. But there’s a problem, you have no clue how to apply and best prepare yourself so that you can land your desired role. And even worse, you don’t have a clue what all those employment terms mean. Luckily for you, we’ve developed a guide that discusses everything you need to know about applying for an apprenticeship.
Do your research
Before applying for an apprenticeship, it is important to research different industries and the types of apprenticeships offered within them. This will help you choose the apprenticeship that suits your interests and long-term goals. Researching different apprenticeships will also give you an idea of what qualifications and skills are required. Not only this, you can see what qualifications you will be awarded and where they can lead you in the future.
Check the requirements
Each apprenticeship program has different requirements. Be sure to check their desired qualities before submitting your application, as some may require specific qualifications or experience. A useful thing to do would be to check the apprenticeship provider’s website for more information on the application process, required documents and deadlines.
Prepare your application
Applying for an apprenticeship is just the same as applying for a job. You will need to prepare a CV and a cover letter. Your CV should highlight any relevant skills, qualifications, and work experience should you have any. Your cover letter should be personalised to the specific organisation you are applying to, explaining why you are interested in the program and what skills and qualities you can bring to the role.
Ace the interview
If your application is successful, you will be invited to an interview. Like any job interview, it is important to prepare beforehand. Research the company and the apprenticeship program, and practice those expected interview questions with a friend or family member. It’s important to highlight your enthusiasm for the role your qualifications, and any experience you have.
