How to tackle those expected interview questions

Have you ever wondered what interview questions you should expect when applying for an apprenticeship? Being prepared for your interview is key to impressing your potential employer and landing the job. Here are some questions you should look out for in your next interview and how to tackle them head-on!

“Tell me about yourself”

Answering “tell me about yourself” in an interview can be daunting, but it doesn’t have to be. To make a positive impression during an apprenticeship interview, think of your response as telling a story. Start with a brief introduction, adding interesting facts that showcase your suitability and enthusiasm for the role. Ensure you emphasise skills that make you uniquely qualified for the job and reveal aspects of your personality that would benefit the employer. This way, the employer has a better idea of who you are and how you could bring value to the company.

“What is your greatest strength?”

When asked “What is your greatest strength” in an interview, it is important to highlight a skill that fits the role. This could be a technical skill that you may have developed or a transferable skill on the basis that you can demonstrate how it relates to the position. Regardless of the answer, talking about how you have used this strength before can impress employers. The interview is all about showing off your skills and making sure employers know you have what it takes to excel in the role, so focus on positive stories and experiences related to your greatest strength!

“Why are you interested in this role?”

Your answer should revolve around the following points:

It’s important to refer to how the role would provide you with a platform to learn and thrive. There should also be a reference to how it provides the chance to gain experience in a particular industry and learn from experienced professionals. You should also highlight how you’re looking to develop specialised technical skills. Combining these with the knowledge you already obtain will allow you to perform and contribute positively to any company or organisation.

“What is a weakness of yours?”

When employers ask what your weaknesses are during an interview, it is not a trick question. They want you to identify an area of weakness and expect you to understand how you can contest this. Instead of taking the traditional route and mentioning general weaknesses like ‘perfectionism’ or ‘working too hard’, take the opportunity to showcase your self-awareness and enthusiasm for professional development. Explain how you are aware of areas that could use some improvement and how you plan on working towards them. For example, if there is a particular software related to the apprenticeship that you don’t know, express excitement at the prospect of learning more about it. This will show employers your willingness to learn and engage with the company. No matter what approach you take, make sure your response portrays you as someone ready to rise to any challenge that comes your way.

“Where do you see yourself in five years?”

It’s a great question because it allows you to demonstrate your ambition and perseverance. Take a moment to think about what kind of career goals or aspirations you have and how this particular apprenticeship can help get you there. It also shows the employer your answer is tailored to them. As always, don’t forget to highlight your interest in the role when responding. Make sure it’s clear that although this role would benefit your development, it’s something that genuinely interests you too!

“Do you have any questions for us?”

The most important thing to keep in mind during the interview process is that it’s a two-way street. When an interviewer allows you to ask questions during the interview, make sure you’re asking thought-provoking and insightful questions. This proves you’ve put time into researching both their company and the specific role. Also, it demonstrates you are serious about the role and the expectation from you. Not only does this demonstrate that you care about your preparation, but it could even give you a leg up over other candidates for the position!
