Understanding T Levels - National Apprenticeship Week 2026

T Levels are a technical qualification available to students aged 16–19 in England. Introduced in 2020, they were designed to sit alongside A Levels and apprenticeships, offering another post-GCSE option for young people.

Rather than replacing existing pathways, T Levels add to the range of choices available, particularly for students interested in developing technical skills linked to specific industries.

How Do T Levels Work?

A T Level is a two-year, full-time qualification delivered mainly through a college or training provider. The structure is split into:

  • Around 80% classroom-based learning, covering technical knowledge, theory, and core skills
  • Around 20% industry placement, where students spend time with an employer in a real workplace setting

Industry placements last a minimum of 45 days and are intended to give students insight into how a sector operates, rather than replacing paid employment.

T Levels are available across a range of occupational areas, including:

  • Education and Early Years
  • Digital and IT
  • Health and Science
  • Construction
  • Engineering and Manufacturing
  • Creative and Design

Each course focuses on a broad career area rather than a single job role.

The Role of Employers

Employers are involved in the development of T Levels to help ensure course content reflects current industry needs. While students gain workplace exposure during their placement, they remain students rather than employees.

This makes T Levels distinct from work-based learning routes where employment is the primary focus.

T Levels vs Apprenticeships: What’s the Difference?

Although T Levels and apprenticeships can appear similar, they are designed for different learning styles and stages.

T Levels

  • Full-time education programme
  • Unpaid industry placement
  • Majority of time spent in a classroom
  • Designed for students who want structured learning with practical experience
  • Can lead to employment, further study, or an apprenticeship

Apprenticeships

  • Paid employment combined with training
  • Majority of time spent in the workplace
  • Learning is directly linked to a specific job role
  • Designed for those ready to enter employment straight away
  • Can lead to higher or degree-level qualifications

In short, T Levels are education-led with workplace exposure, while apprenticeships are employment-led with structured training.

Making an Informed Choice

There’s no one-size-fits-all route after GCSEs. Some students benefit from building knowledge and confidence through a T Level before progressing into work or an apprenticeship, while others prefer to move straight into paid employment.

Understanding the differences between these pathways helps students, parents, and educators make decisions that align with individual goals and readiness for work.
