What is an apprenticeship?

An apprenticeship is a job where you spend 80% of your working hours on workplace duties being guided by team colleagues who can share their experiences and knowledge with you, and the remaining 20% of your working hours dedicated to off the job learning that is lead by your training provider; this could mean maybe a day or block release at a local college or distance learning and workplace development coach visits. You receive a salary for your working hours and your employer is responsible for paying for your training.

What age do you need to be an apprentice or start an apprenticeship?

Whilst school, college or graduate leavers are encouraged to look towards an apprenticeship as a first step into employment, there is no upper age limit. Employers can expect applications from people of all ages who are wanting to change their career path, learn new skills increase their employability chances longer term.

How do you apply for an apprenticeship?

The easiest way is to Google the government ‘find an apprenticeship’ website and complete the registration process – once the registration is complete you will receive text messages letting you know when there are local vacancies for your to apply for. If completing the registration process on your own seems a little bit daunting; you could contact your local college and ask for help and if they have any vacancies or maybe look on the major job sites as often vacancies are posted there as well and send your CV.

What are the main benefits employers bring apprentices into their business?

Employers are looking for fresh ideas and energy and apprentices are generally eager to learn and develop new skills that can support the growth of the business where they are working. Often employers want to support their local community or industry sector and apprentices bring role stability to perhaps an ageing workforce, or skills shortage that needs to be developed.

What happens at the end of the apprenticeship?

Hopefully, you would be considered for a full-time role with your supporting employer, but where this is not possible; you will be confident in your skills and transferable knowledge to apply for new employment opportunities. You will have an enhanced cv and will receive a certificate to prove your capabilities in your apprenticeship route.
