Grow your own talent!

Are you looking for a solution to your resourcing issues? Have you considered taking on an apprentice? The benefits of taking on a young person into your business are many, here are just a few.

Loyalty

Choosing to hire an apprentice brings a certain degree of loyalty with it. Apprentices are fully aware that you are committing to their long-term future by hiring, and they often pay your business back with their loyalty. Additionally, many apprenticeships take at least two years to complete, so you’ve got yourself an engaged individual committed to learning.

Training

You are committing to training and developing an apprentice and so their skills are present rather than being slightly dated – this ensures they will be completing tasks to the highest standard consistently, in turn providing your business with optimum efficiency.

Value

Business costs are rising as a result of things like the pandemic, with 20% reporting a decrease in turnover in March 2022. Apprenticeships are by no means the ‘cheap’ option, but the apprentice wage is considerably lower than the national minimum wage, and the benefits of hiring one mean they offer fantastic value. With the rise in costs for businesses, the apprenticeship route is definitely something that needs to be considered.

Motivation

Apprentices are often engaged and motivated as they are receiving on-the-job training that benefits and develops them personally. That means they’re more motivated to want to listen, take on new challenges and perform the tasks given to them. For you as a business, what could be better?

Succession Planning

Hiring an apprentice allows you to plan ahead. You’re investing time and money into them in return for loyalty and the development of an efficient employee. This means you can plan for the future and develop the individual into more senior positions as their training progresses. In a world where nothing seems certain, that solidarity is a potential gem for businesses.

Exam season – time to act

Exam season – time to act

As you may know, the exam season is fast-approaching for young people across the UK – but what does that mean for your business? It means it’s time to act.

Young people will already be contemplating their next step after leaving school or college, and time is running out. This is your chance to provide them with an opportunity to develop themselves in return for their effort, hard work and commitment.

Don’t fall into the trap of thinking you have plenty of time and miss the peak selection period. Many apprenticeships start in September along with the start of the academic year which is just 3 months away!  Now is the perfect time to start considering sourcing your next apprentice, arriving first on the scene significantly increases your business’ chance of attracting the best young talent, so you need to act fast.

National Learning at Work Week

National Learning at Work Week

National Learning at Work Week takes place this month, the theme this year is Learning Uncovered.

Throughout the week we will be highlighting the skills an apprenticeship course can develop, the potential career pathways it opens up and more. We will also be highlighting the key takeaways for our apprentices and the on the job skills they have learnt.

Many companies use this week as a catalyst for change and use it as an opportunity to reinforce their business’ commitment to the development of their employees. It offers businesses the chance to demonstrate they’re committed to developing their teams, so it makes sense to give it some serious consideration. If you’re looking to make a positive change and are considering nurturing your own talent,  get in touch with us today, or head over to our website to find out more.

Apprentice of the Year

We’re extremely proud of the apprentices we work with and take every opportunity to share their progress and celebrate success. Each year we reach out to our clients and training providers and ask them to nominate an apprentice who they believe has gone the extra mile and demonstrated an excellent commitment to learning and developing their on the job skills.  Nominations are then reviewed and an overall winner is selected. Following are some of the nominations from this year…

Ben Langmead – TotalEnergies

“Ben has demonstrated a significant contribution to the success of the team, has been responsible for a number of high-value strategic customers and is always quick to offer help to colleagues.”

Nathan George – DSV

“Nathan is a huge team player, takes on any challenge with a smile and has a good attitude. He has brought new and innovative ideas to the department too.”

Rowan Swinburn – DSV

“Rowan picked things up very quickly at a very busy time. She has a great work ethic and the ability to work under pressure,  we cannot praise her highly enough for the way she has fitted into the team.”

Thomas Danson – DSV

“Tom is an outstanding advocate for the team. He is a quick learner, very eager to please and has ensured smooth day-to-day operation with our customers.”

Chloe Genney – Tronox

“Chloe plays a significant role in the success of the team, has an amazing ability to learn very quickly and is an exceptional role model for others.”

And the winner is…Rowain Swinburn! Her line manager couldn’t praise Rowan enough, the impact she has had on the businesses during her apprenticeship has been huge and that’s why Rowan is the AEA apprentice of the Year for 2022.

Rowan will receive a £50 Amazon voucher whilst all nominees will receive a £10 One for All voucher along with certificates to celebrate their success.

Well done everyone.

Speaking at the recent FE Week Annual Apprenticeship Conference, Skills Minister Alex Burghart admitted the government ‘must’ increase the number of young people in apprenticeships.

Apprenticeship starts among young people have been steadily decreasing since the government’s levy reforms, with under 19 year olds making up just 20% in 2020/21. Burghart stressed the importance of increasing the number of young people starting apprenticeships and committed to ‘reduce friction’ for small employers using the apprenticeships system.

In light of this, we have a virtual event coming up on Tuesday 21st June from 9.30-10.30am with Jakki Lovewell, our Business Manager. The topic discussed will be ‘Attracting young people back into the workplace’.

Jakki has more than 20 years of experience in the apprenticeship sector, supporting over 100 businesses across the UK to meet their business needs and provide solutions to their employment problems.

The event aims to encourage businesses to discuss their opinions on the reasons behind a falling rate of young people studying apprenticeships and attracting young people back into the workplace.

For more information about this event, please email jakki.lovewell@apprentice-employment.co.uk or call her on 0345 003 0007. If you would like to attend, you can reserve your place below.
